How to read a podcast transcript

  • Apple Podcasts: on iPhone or iPad with iOS 17.4 or later, play the episode, open the player and tap View Transcript. You can search it and tap a line to play from there. A grayed-out button means the episode has none. Apple's steps.
  • The publisher's own: linked from the show's RSS feed with the Podcasting 2.0 podcast:transcript tag, so apps and tools outside Apple's can use it. The tag.

How do I get the transcript of a podcast?
On iPhone or iPad with iOS 17.4 or later, play the episode in Apple Podcasts, open the player and tap View Transcript. A grayed-out button means that episode has none. Elsewhere, look for the publisher's own transcript: it is linked from the show's RSS feed, and the shows listed here link one.
Does Apple write transcripts for every podcast?
Apple generates transcripts automatically after a new episode is published, in English, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish. A creator can supply their own as VTT or SRT instead. They are read inside Apple Podcasts.
Why do so few shows publish their own?
It's extra work for the publisher, and Apple now makes one in its app. Of the 195 shows on the US chart we checked on October 28, 2026, 24 linked a transcript from their newest episode.
Can I clip a podcast by what was said?
Yes, for shows with a timed transcript (WebVTT, SRT or JSON). Open the show in BitePods, find the sentence in the transcript, and mark it in and out. The link plays just that part. Free, no account.
